Kanon Gaming Receives Fine from Swedish Gambling Authority

The Swedish Gaming Authority, Spelinspektionen, has announced that it has issued a warning and fine to Kanon Gaming Limited for breaches of the Gaming Act with regards to its duty of care to customers.

Kanon Gaming Limited has a license for commercial online gaming and operates the websites casinoepic.se, casinogami.se, frejacasino.se and lokecasino.se.

According to the regulator’s announcement, an audit of the company revealed that Kanon did not have the appropriate procedures in place to protect its customers against the harms of excessive gambling. The audit requested an action plan from the company during the audit. The documents supplied did not clearly lay out how the company handled its duty of care to customers.

The audit also required customer data on those who had lost the most during a set period and gamblers from a specific demographic, young players aged 18-24. This was to check if any actions such as deposit limits were put in place for those with significant losses.

Spelinspektionen went on to state that the company did not work proactively to help customers who were exhibiting gambling behavior that indicated they could potentially become problem gamblers. It also found that there were no clear measures in place with respect to young customers who were gambling excessively. While the company stated that it sent automated messages to the customers in question, this was the only attempts made to prevent substantial losses.

The regulator noted that these were breaches of the Gaming Act and issued a formal warning and a penalty fee of SEK 7 million (€622,772/$668,495) to Kanon Gaming Limited.
